About the Role

The Brown County Communications Center is a division of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and was developed in 1994 as a joint effort between Brown County and the City of Aberdeen. The two entities combined their resources to better serve the community by providing a central location for the public and emergency services to report and receive emergency assistance.


The Brown County Communications Center is a state-of-the-art E911 Center located in the third largest city in the State of South Dakota, and operates 24-hours a day, 365-days a year. It provides emergency and non-emergency dispatching services for the approximately 40,000 residents as well as the numerous families, businesses, and sportsmen who visit Brown County every year. Brown County Communications Center averages approximately 10,000 911 calls and 50,000 non-emergency calls for service each year.


Brown County Communications Officers receive extensive training and are certified through the SD Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission as well as the International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch.

Requirements

  • Must perform tasks necessary for the operation of a combined communication center serving: Fire Departments (urban and rural), County Sheriff’s Department, and Police Departments, Ambulance services (urban and rural), Careflight, and any other agency deemed necessary.


  • Receives emergency and non-emergency calls, including enhanced 911, and non-emergency calls from the public, dispatchers, and law enforcement agencies via telephone, radio systems, and CAD systems.


  • Calls are completed in accordance with established local procedures as governed by the Communications Council and the Federal Communications (FCC) Rules and Regulations.


  • Must operate computer terminals for specialized access with various automated data banks in compliance with applicable laws.


  • Assigns appropriate public safety personnel for routine and emergency calls for service.


  • Assists in training new personnel on an assigned basis.


  • Perform other duties as assigned, including notifying supervisor of concerns.

About the Agency

Sheriff to preserve the peace - Apprehension of felons - Execution of process. The Sheriff shall keep and preserve the peace within the county, for which purpose he is empowered to call to his aid such persons or power of his county as he may deem necessary. He must pursue and apprehend all felons, and must execute all writs, warrants, and other process from court or magistrate which shall be directed to him by legal authority.
